Chapter Reading Responses You will write reading responses (RRs) for FIVE of the chapters assigned in Helgeson’s Psychology of Gender textbook. Each of these responses is worth 10 points. Guidelines for writing your RRs follow.
• Although you should read all 11 of the assigned chapters in the Helgeson text, you are required to write only 5 RRs during the semester (you choose which 5 chapters you do).
• RRs must be typed and should be posted to Canvas by the beginning of class time on the due date specified in the Course Schedule section of the syllabus.
• Each RR should be approximately 1-2 pages in length (single-spaced). Though you should write in complete sentences, it is fine to use a bulleted format. These responses are not formal essays or papers.
• Each RR should highlight the three points or concepts in the chapter that you found most interesting our important. For each point, include the following:
o A description of the point or concept (it is best to paraphrase here, but be sure to use quotation marks if you are including exact wording from your textbook); o An explanation for why you found the point to be interesting or important; and o A description of how the point can be connected to some external material, such as other material from PSY 321 (outside of the chapter currently being reviewed), specific material from another course, a current news event or a real world event (provide a link), or a personal experience (by personal experience, I mean something that has happened to you, a friend, or a family member). You should make a different external connection for each interesting point that you include in your RR, and note that you are only allowed to have one of your three external connections be to a personal experience. Also note that you will be evaluated on the amount and quality of reflection that you put into these external connections.
• In terms of organization, it works best to discuss all three of the above elements for each textbook point before moving on to the next point.

It is important to understand the impact an expert testimony may have in the ultimate decision made by a court. In addition, it is helpful for practitioners of forensic psychology to be able to read and understand legal cases.

The case describes an appellate legal opinion or court decision involving expert witness testimony. When a case is appealed, it goes to an appellate or to a higher court. The appellate court then reviews the findings of the lower court, which in this case was the trial court. The appellate court offered the following two opinions: The first opinion (Commonwealth of Virginia v. Allen, 2005, pp. 1–24) is the majority opinion and is the one that counts. The second opinion (Commonwealth of Virginia v. Allen, 2005, pp. 24–31) is an opinion filed by a minority of judges who concurred (agreed) in part and dissented (disagreed) in part with the majority of the judges who ruled.
After reading the appellate legal opinion, write a 2- to 3-page paper addressing the following: Discuss whether either of the expert witnesses in this case acted unethically. For many years, the ethical dilemma of playing both a therapeutic role and a forensic role has been debated in the literature. Some authorities argue that there is always a conflict of interest in such dual relationships, while other authorities argue that the two roles can be reconciled and impartiality can be maintained. Using appropriate online resources (.edu, .org, etc.) , locate at least ten articles that discuss the therapeutic role and the forensic role and take a stance on this particular debate. Make sure that your collection of articles is balanced with regard to the roles and the viewpoints.
Utilize the ethical decision-making process you learned about (APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and APA Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology) to create a 7- to 8-page argumentative paper supporting your stand. First, compare and contrast the roles, articulate the potential ethical conflicts, and discuss how those conflicts might be managed. Then, in a reasoned fashion, develop an argument for whether the two roles—therapeutic and forensic—should ethically coincide.
The course paper is essentially an argumentative essay. Ensure that you follow these instructions: Identify and articulate the similarities and differences between the therapeutic and forensic roles for both assessment and treatment. Articulate the potential ethical conflicts and discuss how those conflicts might be managed. Using multiple sources, defend your thesis on how and why therapeutic and forensic roles should or should not be reconciled. Some people do not hesitate to walk across a fiery pit of glowing coals. For most of us, firewalking is likely to be a big decision. Suggest what kind of measurements might tell us how firewalkers differ from people who refuse to firewalk. Be inventive; it’s not a research proposal. It’s fine to begin with cultural or genetic or experiential differences, but then try to pinpoint the mental trait or process or deficiency that would lead one person to be a firewalker and another to refuse. You will watch one of the movies listed from the perspective of a developmental theorist. This gives you an opportunity to dig deeper into one of the major theories/theorists we studied this semester and apply that theory in a more concrete manner. Please choose only ONE theory or theorist to focus on. You may reference other theories/theorists, but I want you to focus on ONE overall theory or theorist for the paper. Make sure that you state which theory you will be using in your introduction paragraph so that I know what to look for in the rest of the paper. Examples of developmental theories/theorists include the following: Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory (Stages); Learning Theories (Behaviorism/Skinner); Social-Cognitive Theory (Bandura); Cognitive Theories (Piaget); Sociocultural Theory (Vygotsky); Information Processing Theory; Ethology and Evolutionary Biological Psychology; and Ecological Systems Theory (Bronfenbrenner).
I recommend that you choose your theory/theorist before watching the movie and do enough research to feel comfortable with the theory/theorist. You will have to use outside sources beyond the textbook to get a more comprehensive understanding of the theory/theorist. You will then be able to find solid examples of the observed developmental stages that fit the theory. You can choose to watch a movie other than those listed above, but you must get previous approval from me. If you do not get approval, you will not earn credit for the project. Please know that some of these movies have offensive language, graphic scenes, and so on. It is fully your responsibility to do research into the film content before viewing it if you are concerned about these issues. I accept no responsibility for any negative impacts these movies may have on you, because it is up to you to make an informed decision about which movie to watch.
2. Your paper should have a strong integration of both theory and movie excerpts throughout the paper.
I do not want a summary of the movie. I want an explanation of the observed developmental stages presented in the movie and examples to support them. For each example you provide, please say how or why that example fits the theory. If a particular example does not fit the model, please include a few sentences about how it does not fit. There will likely be some parts of the movie or the characters that do not fit the model well. In this case, feel free to talk a bit about another theory/theorist that might better explain the developmental stage.
3. Cite your sources throughout the paper and provide a reference page.
APA style is required throughout the paper. Please use www.apastyle.org.aspx, http://owl.english.purdue.edu, ccconline tutor – Brainfuse, or your home school writing lab if you are not familiar with APA style. As part of APA style, you will include a cover page, reference page, headers with page numbers, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double spaced, and so forth. There is no need to include an abstract.
REQUIREMENTS: The minimum word count for this paper is 2,000 words. You must include at least five sources, three of which must come from academic journals (see list of academic journals that follows).
