compensating employees. Using the material on compensation provided in

this week’s lesson and the case study, write a short paper in which

you:

 • Describe the compensation philosophy of Maersk and how the market

influences this philosophy.

• Describe the advantages of discretionary benefits to Maersk.

Guidelines for Submission:

Answer the following questions covering material from Ch. 6 & 7 of Methods in Behavioral Research:

1. What is reactivity? Explain how reactivity impacts measurement.

2. What are the key features of an experimental design, or ‘true experiment’? How does this compare to case studies?

3. What is survey research and when is it most useful?

4. What issues should be considered when constructing surveys? What are the implications of double-barreled, loaded, and negative questions?

5. What are some survey administration methods? When are each of these methods most appropriate?

6. Define interview bias and provide an example.

7. What is the difference between probability and non-probability sampling techniques?

8. A researcher attends an art reception in a major metropolitan city. She decides to approach people over the age of 50 and ask them to fill out a brief survey about purchasing artwork. Is this a probability or a non-probability sampling technique? What type of sampling procedure is this—simple random, stratified random, cluster, haphazard, purposive, or quota?

9. What is the relationship between sample size and survey results? What are some techniques to evaluate potential sampling bias?

1. What are single-case designs and when are they most useful?

2. How may a researcher enhance the generalizability of the results of a single case design?

3. What is the relationship between quasi-experiments and confounding variables? Provide an example

4. Provide examples of: one-group posttest designs and one-group pretest and posttest designs. What are the limitations of each?

5. Provide examples of non-equivalent control group designs. What are the advantages of having a control group?

6. What is a quasi-experimental research design? Why would a researcher use a quasi-experimental design rather than a true experimental design?

7. What is the difference between a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study? What is a sequential study? Which of these designs is most vulnerable to cohort effects? Which design is most vulnerable to the effects of attrition?

8. What are the differences between: needs assessment, program assessment, process evaluation, outcome evaluation, and efficacy assessment? Why is program evaluation important to the field?

9. A researcher wants to investigate patriotic behavior across the lifespan. She samples people in the following age groups: 18–28, 29–39, 40–50, 51–60, and 61 and above. All participants are interviewed and asked to complete questionnaires and rating scales about patriotic behavior. This type of developmental research design is called __Cross-Sectional______________. What is the primary disadvantage of this type of design? Explain.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Did you know that there are pro-eating-disorder-websites? For example, there are hundreds of pro-anorexia, or “pro-ana,” discussion groups on the Internet. Although some of these webpages claim to be non-judgmental support groups for people suffering from anorexia, many provide tips for losing weight, and post “inspirational” pictures of extremely thin people. Some even claim that anorexia is a valid lifestyle choice. Since these websites first began to appear, doctors and clinicians have grown increasingly concerned about the effect they might have on those suffering from eating disorders, especially young girls. Studies suggest that visiting these websites negatively affects self-esteem and body image, and that the severity and length of an eating disorder can be made worse by visiting them. Some experts and advocates have called for these pro-eating-disorder sites to be banned or blocked by various governments around the world.

For your assignment … What is your opinion — should pro-anorexia websites be banned or not? Does freedom of speech apply to these websites? Should websites be banned if they encourage dangerous behaviors? Should websites that encourage drug use or even skydiving be banned? Do you believe that closing pro-ana websites would reduce the prevalence of anorexia?

just need a paragraph or two

Read  the following scenario:

You are an independent consultant who has recently been hired by JC’s Casino to help improve retention issues concerning the dealers and housekeepers. Most of the dealers have been leaving the casino to work at other casinos in the area, even though JC’s Casino pays better than their local competition. On several exit interviews, many of the dealers have cited the pit boss, Joe, as being “toxic, overbearing, evil, and incompetent.” Joe is the casino owner’s step-son and the HR director, Tom Sneed, is afraid to confront the owner.

Among the housekeeping staff, there has been an above normal rate of absenteeism and high turnover of rooms. Many of the managers who work in accounting, payroll, and other departments have had to ask their full-time employees to help cover for housekeeping by cleaning rooms periodically. Because of this problem, the hotel has had to adjust their check in times from 3 p.m. (the industry standard) to 6 p.m. Customers have arrived earlier and the hotel has had to accommodate them by creating a room to hold luggage. They have also had to hire staff to man the luggage room.

The director of housekeeping, Andrew Keehn, has been working hard to add more staff but he states “good help is hard to find.” The housekeeper’s current hourly wage is comparable to other casinos in the area but because of the staffing shortage, the housekeepers have to clean more rooms per day than their counterparts. The casino owner only knows that there are some issues with keeping the dealers and that some customers were upset because they had to wait to check in. You have been hired for a quick fix and your suggestions were needed yesterday.

Write  a 1,400- to 1,700-word paper in which you identify each issue and make recommendations to JC, the casino president, on how to improve overall retention. What the scenario does not provide, you can create. Be sure to include the following in your assessment:Evaluate at least two work motivation theories and how they can be applied in order to improve employee recruitment and retention at JC’s Casino.Examine possible occupational stressors that are negatively influencing recruitment and retention. What improvements would you suggest to alleviate these stressors?Examine the role of job satisfaction and its influence on retention at the casino. Provide recommendations for improving job satisfaction of the employees and how that can play a part in successfully improving retention.Discuss counterproductive employee behavior occurring at the casino. What suggestions would you make to reduce the counterproductive behavior and increase productive employee behavior?

Include  at least three references.

Format  your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Professional Development Experience

Being an effective early childhood professional requires more than a passion for teaching or ability to work well with children. In the first five years of life, the most critical skills are formed by creating synaptic connections that are key to cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development. Because of their developmental stage, the environment you provide as an early educator will set the foundation for each child’s K- 12 learning experience and beyond. However, as an early childhood professional, you will not work in isolation. Other professionals contribute to service provided to this population, including speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, and educational advocates. Therefore, it is essential that as an early childhood professional you are able to communicate effectively with other professionals.

Scenario: The principal from a local school district was impressed with the proposal you wrote for him about the role families and communities play in promoting optimal cognitive development. Based on your proposal, they have offered you a spot as a key presenter at a district-wide professional development workshop for teachers, where you will share your knowledge regarding cognitive development. All of these ideas will come together as you design your Professional Development Experience project. Before starting your Final Project, you are encouraged to view the Week Five Instructor Guidance for additional information, resources, and support, including a deeper look at the professionals you will work with in the field. Additionally, review the Grading Rubric for this assignment to understand how you will be evaluated and contact your instructor using the “Ask Your Instructor” tab before the due date with questions.

In order to develop this comprehensive workshop for the targeted professional development population, the principal has given you specific talking points that must be addressed. You will use these talking points to guide your creation of a presentation using PowerPoint or Google Slides. In the slide notes section, please make sure to support the information you have shared on each slide. Finally, make sure to include a title and reference slide for your presentation.

The Professional Development Experience must include the following:Theoretical Framework (2 points): Explain a theoretical framework that supports early childhood cognitive development in a classroom environment.Language and Cognitive Development (2 points): Describe at least three ways language development impacts cognitive development using the theoretical framework you have identified.Motor and Cognitive Development (2 points): Describe at least three ways motor development impacts cognitive development using the theoretical framework you have identified.Motor or Speech delay (2 points): Explain at least three ways a delay in speech or motor functioning impacts learning and cognitive development. Describe the area of the brain responsible for these functions.Interplay of Genes, Biology, and Environment (2 points): Analyze the interplay of genetics, biology, and environmental factors on brain functioning and cognitive development by providing at least three examples.Neuroplasticity and Trauma (2 points): Apply the concept of neuroplasticity by providing one example from your current or future professional work. Discuss the impact that trauma has on the developing brain.Neurodevelopmental Disorders (2 points): Explain one specific neurodevelopmental disorder including the genetics, biological, and environmental influences related to this disorder.Family and Culture (2 points): Summarize the relationship between family and culture on cognitive development including the development of judgment and reasoning.Intelligence and Achievement Testing (2 points): Discuss one specific intelligence test and one specific achievement test and their use in education in determining appropriate services and resources for children.Application of Concepts (2 points): Apply one specific cognitive strategy you would use to improve working memory, attention, and executive function to children with diverse needs.Collaboration with Colleagues (2 points): Discuss where and when collaboration and referrals to other professionals including a speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, school psychologist, and educational advocate would be appropriate and necessary.

The presentation: Presentation Features (2 points): Incorporate at least five images are relevant to the slide content.Presentation Length (1 point): Include a minimum of 12  slides (not including title and reference slides).Presentation Content (1 point): The content throughout the presentation is relevant to the main point.APA Formatting (1 Point): Use APA formatting consistently throughout the assignment, which includes citations in the body of the assignment, the title slide, and references.Source Requirement (2.5 Points):Utilize at least 4 scholarly sources in addition to the course text. All sources included in the References list must be cited in the content of the presentation.Syntax and Mechanics (0.5 Points): Display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling and grammar.

Self-Reflection

Reflecting on your learning is a useful strategy for ensuring you have a solid understanding of the content being learned. With four weeks of our course complete, it is an ideal time to stop and reflect on what you have learned and how you will use what you have learned in your work with children. Create a one page document that considers your learning from the course to date. Include your thoughts on the following:Which activities have been most enjoyable to you and why?Which knowledge or skills have you acquired that have been the most meaningful to you and why? What have you learned that you feel has application for you professionally? Provide a specific example to help explain your thinking. What topic that has been discussed in this course do you feel like you still need a better understanding of?How might you go about gaining a deeper understanding of this topic?

Screeners and Diagnostic Tests

According to Wortham (2012), “Screening tests are administered to detect indicators that a child might have a developmental problem that needs to be further investigated” (p. 56). As a teacher you can then use these results to effectively plan how to best meet the needs of your students. For this assignment, start by analyzing two different children from the example “Developmental Checklists Birth to Five” document. These checklists are already completed and contain information about the development of children ranging in ages from birth to five. You will need to use the developmental checklist of two different children’s age groups to complete your analysis. Based on your analysis, create an activity to address one skill on the checklist for each child. Your assignment should include:

An analysis of two different children from the checklists. Make sure to state which checklist you are using in your analysis and the age of each child. Your analysis needs to include information that you have learned from the checklist about each child’s strengths and developmental concerns you would have about the child. Be specific and describe at least three different developmental areas that are covered on the checklist.

For one item on each checklist, create an activity that will allow you to address each child’s need on that particular skill. (e.g., If you use the checklist for 12- to 24-month-olds and it states that they cannot sort shapes or colors, your activity would contain elements such as naming colors and shapes, identifying colors and shapes, and finding examples.)

For each activity, include a rationale that explains the purpose of the activity.

You will need to submit this assignment to your instructor as a Word document. Your assignment should be four to five pages in length, not including the title page and a reference page. Lastly, include at least one scholarly source in addition to your textbook and utilize proper 6th-edition APA citation guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
