Week 5 – Assignment
Rapid Review 3
Select a psychoactive drug that is of pharmacological interest to you, but not one you will review as part of your Critical Review or one that was included in your previous Rapid Reviews. For this paper, you may choose drugs of abuse; however, the paper must focus on the pharmacology of the drug and not on the social or addictive aspects. If you focus on addiction and social impact, your paper will not receive credit.
In addition to the text, research a minimum of three peer-reviewed articles published within the last five years on your selected drug. Prepare a three-page summary of the drug using the PSY630 Rapid Review Example paper as a guide.
In your Rapid Review, analyze and explain the pharmacological aspects of the drug as they relate to the following: neurotransmitters affected, receptors, route of administration, half-life, doses, side effects, drug interactions, contraindications, and other important facets of the drug. Explain these aspects of the drug in terms of the psychiatric disorders indicated for the drug and the issue(s) associated with that use. If there is no accepted therapeutic use for the drug, evaluate and describe the actions of the drug with regard to the abuse process.
Must be three to five double-spaced pages in length, excluding title page and references page, and it must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Must include a title page with the following: Title of paper Your name Course name and number Your instructor’s name Date submitted Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought. Must use at least three peer-reviewed sources in addition to the text. Must document all sources in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center
The efficacy of two kinds of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in relation to a clinical population were
compared. The therapies differed on the dimension of how wedded they were to the rational-emotive
behavioral therapy (REBT), a subtype of CBT that emphasizes a directive, confrontational approach to
encourage a patient to recognize the irrationality of specific thought patterns. Forty adolescents at an
inpatient clinic for treatment of self-destructive behaviors were randomly divided into two groups of
equal size, one of which received the less challenging type of CBT (Treatment A) and one of which
received the more challenging kind of CBT (Treatment B). All patients were treated by trained therapists
in one-on-one sessions for 1.5 hours per day (broken down into 45-minute sessions) for six weeks. All
participants were apprised that they were part of a study, all participants signed consent forms, and all
were told they would be informed of the results at its conclusion; participants exhibiting any behaviors
that required critical intervention were promptly treated outside the plan of the study. Outcome data
on the Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (RBPC)-PAR Edition* collected at the conclusion of six weeks
as shown below (also found in the Data Set Scenario 3 Excel file).
Treatment A Treatment B
(Please write using word document, and use excel when performing graphs)
A. Based on your results, determine whether the data provide evidence for a valid effect.
B. Explain whether or not the results are statistically significant. Support your response with results from the data analysis.
C. Present properly labeled graphs representing the data analysis results detailed clearly for ease of stakeholder interpretation.
A. Explain your interpretation of the data. In other words, based on your results, what do you think the data mean? What are the potential
implications of this data for the stakeholders? What do these results mean for future research into the topic area?
B. Justify the data analysis procedures you used to reach your interpretation.
C. Discuss whether it would be appropriate to conduct more statistical procedures to further interpret the data.
This paper provides the opportunity to apply the theories and interventions learned throughout the semester to an individual from your CURRENT field placement or to one of the cases provided for you. If you have never utilized interpersonal, psychodynamic, and/or cognitive behavioral approaches in your work, then act as if you did. By this I mean: analyze the client through the lenses of interpersonal, psychodynamic, and cognitive theories and then apply the interventions stemming from these theories.
It is expected that the paper include references from this course (i.e., texts, required readings), and a minimum of FIVE empirical and theoretical scholarly articles that are not on the syllabus. At least FOUR of your outside sources should come from scholarly journals, not books or websites. The DSM does not count as one of your scholarly sources.
The paper should be 11 to 12 pages (not including title page or references) typed in 12-point font, double-spaced, and with one inch margins. APA style citations and references are required. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is essential that you protect the confidentiality of your client (i.e., use pseudonyms in place of actual names of persons and in place of highly sensitive information that could link individuals and agencies). DO NOT INCLUDE AN ABSTRACT. NO DIRECT QUOTES ALLOWED. PARAPHRASE ONLY.
ORGANIZATION OF THE PAPER
Part I: Choose a client from your current field placement OR one of the cases provided for you. If you choose one provided for you, the instructor cannot provide any other information regarding the case.
Part II: Assessment (no more than 5 pages) Briefly describe your professional setting (no more than two or three sentences). Identify the client’s presenting problem. Include client information (age, gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation and/or gender identity, family composition, etc.). Also, discuss whether the client used social or mental health services in the past. This is a good place to cite literature that is not on the syllabus. Discuss how membership in an oppressed group might contribute to or exacerbate the problem. For example, if your client is Latina, discuss some of the psychosocial issues encountered by Latina populations and whether or not these issues relate to your client. This is a good place to cite literature that is not on the syllabus. What family issues and/or stressful/traumatic/developmental experiences have contributed to the client’s current problem? Describing these experiences is not enough. Advanced clinical practice requires you to carefully analyze these experiences and explain how they affect your client’s psychosocial functioning. This is a good place to cite literature that is not on the syllabus. Include a psychiatric diagnosis according to DSM-5 . See example below. Please phrase in the following way:
According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) Ms. Smith meets criteria for:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
6. Briefly describe the client’s strengths. Or briefly explain the way in which the client has manifested resilience throughout his or her life. Discuss the importance of client’s religion or spirituality, if applicable.
7. Describe two of the client’s treatment goals. The client’s treatment goals should stem from the problems under discussion. Please see the chapter on goals in the course tools section. Goals should be one sentence each and should be measurable. Only describe two treatment goals.
Part III: Interpersonal Interaction (no more than three-quarters of a page)
How does the client interact with you during sessions or during your contacts with them? How does this help you to understand how s/he interacts with others, or the way in which others react to her/him?
Part IV: Engagement (no more than 1 page)
Describe the role of the holding environment in the engagement process. First, define the holding environment and briefly discuss the clinical/developmental theories underlying this intervention. Second, discuss why the holding environment is necessary for engaging and establishing a therapeutic alliance with your client. The discussion should be specific to your client—DO NOT discuss the material in a general way. This is a good place to cite literature that is not on the syllabus.
Part V: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) OR CBT-Related Interventions (no more than 4 pages)
Describe TWO cognitive behavioral interventions (e.g., uncovering automatic thoughts, identifying distortions, using thought stopping, or using deep breathing) that can be used to help the client achieve his/her goals. Your discussion MUST include the theory underlying the cognitive behavioral model.
PROVIDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. Do NOT discuss the interventions in a general way. Relate the interventions to the client’s problem.
Describe TWO interventions stemming from (a) Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), (b) Trauma-Focused CBT, or (c) Exposure and Response Prevention. Choosing one of these approaches means that you will have to describe the specific theory underlying the approach. For example, if you choose DBT, you will discuss Linehan’s biosocial theory and how it informs the skills training component of DBT.
PROVIDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES. Do NOT discuss the interventions in a general way. Relate the interventions to the client’s problem.
Part VI: Professional Use of Self (no more than 1 page)
Describe some of the factors (e.g., countertransference, personal biases, judgments) that influenced—or could have influenced—the development and maintenance of the therapeutic relationship. Did you need to modify your practice in any way?
Choose one option below and write 600 words about one of the option. Choose one you have a good understanding about?and explain it thoroughly.
Why is the geographical location of heaven supposed to be an important issue in the Soul Narrative? Why is that issue such a tough one?
This is something that has come up before: Do Trans-Humanism and Traditional Religion agree on the possibility of an un-embodied or disembodied personality? If so, why?
What hurdles would purported evidence for a previous life, or lives, or for an After-Life have leap to be compelling?

Discussion—Barriers and Differences in Treating Women
Treating substance-abusing women can be a completely different entity from treating men. Often, women who abuse substances face significant barriers when seeking treatment, and are often in need of therapeutic techniques specifically tailored to suit their needs.
Keeping this in mind, and using the textbook, lecture materials, and other scholarly resources, respond to the following questions: 1Describe the barriers that women face when seeking treatment. 2.Compare and contrast how these barriers differ from the barriers faced by men. 3.Recommend several treatment modifications that should be made for women in treatment. 4.Explain why these modifications are important and how they are different from treatment for men.
Write your initial response in approximately 300–400 words using APA standards. PLEASE BE DETAILED ORIENTED.
Positive Psychology and Spirituality
Substance abuse counseling lends itself nicely to the integration of positive psychology and spirituality. While both of these therapy approaches have been explored for many years, the integration into substance abuse counseling is a relatively new development. As such, many clients may not be aware of the techniques in positive psychology and spirituality that can be of use in their recovery.
Juanita has been seeking treatment for her marijuana use from you for a month now. While she has significantly cut back on her substance use, she is having difficulty quitting and remaining abstinent for periods that last longer than a few days. In your counseling sessions, Juanita has mentioned that she feels very badly about herself—she feels guilty about being unable to quit and explains that she doesn’t think she is strong enough to quit altogether. She has also expressed nervousness that her boyfriend would no longer like her if she quit smoking, and she has expressed concern that if he leaves her, she wouldn’t be able to find a new boyfriend because she doesn’t believe she is pretty enough. Juanita is also unsatisfied with her job as a cashier at the local grocery store, but has expressed her opinion that she doesn’t think she is smart enough to get a better job. You know from Juanita’s history, that her mother was very critical of Juanita when she was a child and that her father was absent for most of her childhood. In high school, Juanita excelled at classes in biology and math, but she never attended college.
To help Juanita overcome her barriers to marijuana abstinence, write a summary of what the counselor should cover in the next meeting with Juanita. Ensure that you cover the following points: 1.Explain the concepts of positive psychology to Juanita. 2.Examine the goals of positive psychology and explain how this approach will help Juanita obtain sobriety, focusing specifically on the concerns and dissatisfactions she has expressed. 3.Design at least two exercises based on positive psychology for Juanita to work on in between counseling sessions. 4.Explain spirituality to Juanita, emphasizing the differences between spirituality and religion. 5.Examine how spirituality and positive psychology can work together to help Juanita achieve her goals.
Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Use scholarly resources, including the textbook to support your ideas. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. PLEASE BE DETAILED ORIENTED.
Discussion—Licensure, Certification Requirements, and Career Enhancement
Over the course of the past few modules you have learned about the theories of substance abuse counseling. This includes the ethical principles of counseling, ways to apply these principles, and the development of treatment plans, as well as many other areas applicable to substance abuse counseling. You discussed and answered questions about how to deal with specific situations in counseling, how to work with clients, and how to develop a theoretical framework.
By now you will have come to the conclusion that your education as a substance abuse counselor does not stop here. There are many career enhancement resources available to substance abuse counselors. To prepare for this final discussion question, explore the following resources for both career enhancement and licensure or certification requirements: Addiction Technology Transfer Center National Office (ATTC). (2011). Certification information. Retrieved from http://www.attcnetwork.org/certifications/search.aspx National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC). (2010). Retrieved from http://www.naadac.org/
Using the information you have examined on the recommended Web sites listed above, respond to the following questions: 1.Explain which of the treatment techniques discussed in this course you will use the most in your career and why? 2.Identify the areas in substance abuse counseling that you need for future learning to help you in your career and include at least one career enhancement resource available to substance abuse counselors that will help you meet this goal. 3.Explore the licensure or certification requirements in your state. 4.What are the steps to obtain licensure or certification in your state? 5.Identify the continuing education requirements for maintaining your licensure or certification in your state.
Write your initial response in approximately 300–400 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
Furness and Gilligan (2010) stated, “There is a growing body of literature written predominantly for health professionals and more recently for social workers about the importance of developing and incorporating cultural and spiritual sensitivity and awareness in their work with others” (p. 2187). Spirituality, which may or may not include involvement with an established religion, contributes to human diversity and influences human behavior. An individual’s spirituality may be an important factor in his or her social environment. As a social worker, your awareness of a client’s spirituality may help increase your understanding of the client and his or her needs.
Sensitivity to and respect for your client’s spiritual dimension reflects your appreciation of diversity. As you consider the potential impact of your clients’ spirituality on their perspectives and behavior, you must also consider how your spirituality might influence your interactions with a client.
For this Discussion, you consider the impact of spirituality on your interactions with clients.
Post a Discussion in which you explain how considerations about clients’ worldviews, including their spirituality or religious convictions, might affect your interactions with them. Provide at least two specific examples. In addition, explain one way your own spirituality (Christianity) or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present. Finally, share one strategy for applying an awareness of spirituality to social work practice in general.
