Assignment 2:  Problem Solving

Due Week 9 and worth 150 points

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.)

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Review the six-step problem solving process outlined in the webtext, based on the article “The Problem Solving Process” located at  http://www.gdrc.org/decision/problem-solve.html: Step One: Define the problem Step Two: Analyze the problem Step Three: Generate options Step Four: Evaluate options Step Five: Make your decision Step Six: Implement and reflect

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

1. Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen.

2. Analyze the problem in the scenario.

3. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario.

4. Evaluate the options for solving the problem.

5. Decide on the best option for solving the problem.

6. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing: Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph. Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences. Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements: Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

You should follow these submission guidelines: Submit the paper draft to Turnitin.com and then submit the originality report with the draft to Blackboard.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are: Recognize the hindrances to the decision-making process in order to apply problem-solving skills to a variety of situations. Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking. Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

Research Methods in Neuroscience

After reading Chapter 5, Methods and Strategies in Research in the course text, choose an original peer-reviewed research article from the Week Two Articles List provided  (or get approval from the instructor for another article). The list of articles will allow you to become familiar with a variety of methodologies used in the study of neurobehavioral symptoms as well as an extensive range of disorders that are appropriate for study in this field. As a professional in the field of psychology, you will often be asked to summarize and evaluate relevant research in the field for various audiences in an oral presentation.

Each student must evaluate a unique article that is not being reviewed by another classmate. You must “claim” your article by Day 1 by posting your choice in the Ashford Cafe. You will create a video of your oral presentation based on the criteria listed below and post a link to your video in the discussion forum by Day 3. Use YouTube.com or Screencast-o-matic to create and upload your video to the discussion forum. Refer to the YouTube WebCam Quick-Start Guide or Screencast-o-matic Quick-Start Guide for step by step instructions. It is highly recommended that you review the YouTube Privacy Policy or Screencast-o-matic Privacy Policy information prior to submitting your video.

Your 5 minute video presentation must include the following elements:  Brief overview An analysis of the research methodology used Independent and dependent variables Study design Explanation of the results Strengths and weaknesses of the study Suggestions for how to improve the research design or methodology

Note to Students: This assignment requires that you produce a visual presentation, supply a spoken audio narrative, and to listen the audio narrative of others.  Note you are also asked to provide a transcript of your presentation.  If you have a documented disability accommodation that might interfere with your ability to complete this assignment you may contact your instructor to develop a comparable alternative assignment.  If you have other issues that you feel may be a barrier to your ability to complete this course or this assignment please contact the Office of Access and Wellness at: [email protected] .

Assignment 3: Views on Diversity

Pablo believes that diversity is the most important issue in our culture, and that it is greatly underemphasized. On the other hand, Ralph rarely thinks of diversity, except when it is mentioned in the workplace. Monica is sensitized to multicultural issues because her parents are immigrants who still struggle with discrimination after being here for 20 years.

To obtain a cross-section of what people think about diversity, conduct five-minute interviews with three individuals you don’t know well, and assess their views on diversity. You have been provided an Informed Consent document for the respondents to sign along with verbally consenting to participate in this assignment. This is to enable that the respondents demonstrate a clear understanding of the meaning and purpose of this assignment. While you are expected to use the informed consent form in keeping with ethical practices for data collection, you do not need to submit it to the instructor as part of the assignment.

Ask the respondents the following questions and record their answers:When you hear the word diversity mentioned in the workplace, in the media, or in casual conversation, what meaning do you assign this term?Does a particular race, ethnic group, or other minority group come to mind when you think of diversity? Does one of these groups pertain to you?Do you think the majority of people in our culture:Respect cultural differences among groups of people.Show indifference to cultural differences.Lack respect for cultural differences. Explain each choice. If you were to make a suggestion about how our culture should handle diversity over the next decade, what would it be?

Compile your responses and write a brief reflection paper (two pages) on your findings. Specifically address the following issues:What did you discover was the general attitude toward diversity in our culture? Is diversity more associated with one race, ethnic, or other minority group than with others? If so, explain why this might be the case.Compare and contrast the respondent’s views with your own. How would you answer the same questions?

Submit your response to the M1: Assignment 3 Dropbox by Wednesday, December 16, 2015. Your response should be at least two pages long. All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Deliverable Length:    10–12 slides, references optional. Use of the notes section and including visual appeal is mandatory

Create a PowerPoint presentation of a crime scene that you create (not one copied from another source) related to a domestic violence homicide. The crime scene must demonstrate the following characteristics:

1.    Evidence of motive, opportunity, and means (MOM) consistent with domestic violence

2.    Evidence of signature behavior consistent with domestic violence

3.    The presence of one or more X-factors (i.e., events beyond the offender’s control that alter the crime scene or the offender’s behavior)

4.    The crime scene should also contain other elements that you choose to enhance the quality of their presentation. Examples include staging, multiple victims, murder-suicide (common to domestic violence), and victim-precipitation (when the original victim turns table on the offender and victimizers them instead; you could also include an example of the “burning bed” offense).

For your PowerPoint presentation, make sure you provide notes in the Notes section. The presentation should be visually appealing.

Assignment Objectives

Define and utilize concepts necessary to profile cases such as modus operandi, signature behavior, and crime scene reconstruction and offender typology.

Demonstrate an understanding of the categories of abnormal behavior that are likely to be encountered in criminal behavior .

Tidbits I was considering to put in my Speaker notes:

Most dangerous situations can be identified and prevented “if only officials had done their jobs. Too many women are murdered only because the police, prosecutors, and courts to whom she had earlier gone for help failed to respond properly or failed to respond at all (WJC, 2010).”

Assessment question considering asking a victim:

Ever used a weapon against you or threatened you with a weapon

Threatened to kill you or your children

Do you think he/she might try to kill you

Does he/she have a gun or get one easily

Ever choked you

Violently or constantly jealous or control most of your daily activities

Have you left him/her or separated after living together or being married

Unemployed

Ever tried to kill him/herself

Do you have a child that he/she knows is not his/hers

Follow or spy on you or leave threatening messages

Links I’ve used/considering to support slide in the speaker notes section.

choose a theoretical perspective and discuss it.  Theories such as those proposed by Carroll, Sternberg, Campioni et al., or Gardner are a sample of specific theories of intelligence.

This week you examine a number of theories of intelligence on which current measures of intelligence are based. The importance of theory is not always obvious, but knowledge and understanding of theory will help you make effective use of information garnered from assessments. This, in turn, will help you make sound decisions for the people with whom you are working.

As you explore this week’s Learning Resources, you will see that many theories address the concept ofintelligence as an overall cognitive ability, while others represent it as multiple abilities. For this Discussion, choose one theoretical perspective on cognition, intelligence, or personal competence and consider its advantages over other theoretical perspectives.

Create a genogram that reflects the narrative shared in chapter 8.  Be creative in giving a visual representation of the family dynamic.

attached is a copy of the narrative shared in chapter 8. You should have experience in completing a genogram before. If you’ve  never done a genogram or don’t know what a genogram is, then this assignment is not for you.

This is due may 3rd 2018 by 1700 Eastern standard time.

Read  the following scenario:

Woody’s Veneer Factory has contacted you because the board wants their organization to be evaluated to determine the reasons for loss of money, increases in garbage fees, and loss of production. The data given to you shows that veneer production is at its lowest point and the cost of recycled material disposal has nearly doubled in the past quarter.

On the day your team went to meet the factory superintendent, Max Barath, you saw one of the floor managers, Dave Flores, outside of Max’s office with a bag of ice over his eye. When the team inquired about the injury, Max stated, “It’s not a big deal. The quality control officer, Ken Howk, got upset with Dave and got in a little fight. Don’t worry about it. These two are old high school chums and this kind of thing happens now and then.”

Through several weeks of your assessment, your team has noticed troubling occurrences happening in the factory. The factory managers that are located on the top floor are very abrasive and condescending to the people on the floor. There is a definite ‘us versus them’ attitude. There is also a lack of communication. Most of the communication is done on a bulletin board out front.

Your team has also noticed that the floor workers are grinding up some of the good veneer. Management believes this is happening, so they are sneaking up in the cat walks to try to catch the floor workers in the act. But the floor workers have placed spies to watch out for the managers, particularly in the administrative areas next to the management offices. Whenever a manager comes out of the office, the administrative staff will call or text down to the floor to let the workers know so they can stop grinding up the good veneer. In addition, several employees on the floor are used as look outs and use hand signals to let everyone know what is going on.

You are tasked to give a full report to the investors who pay for this factory.

Write  a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper in which you utilize industrial/organizational psychology to make recommendations to improve the situation at Woody’s Veneer Factory. Using basic concepts and theories of organizational development, develop a plan to improve working conditions within the factory and describe how it will reduce garbage fees, increase production, and the factory will once again be making a profit. What the scenario does not provide, you can create. Include the following in your paper:

·         Introduction –

·         Using basic concepts and theories of organizational development, develop a plan to improve working conditions within the factory and describe how it will reduce garbage fees, increase production, and the factory will once again be making a profit.

·         Analyze different group and team concepts that could be implemented in order to improve the performance and diversity of employees in the factory.

·         Provide at least two examples of leadership theories and how to implement them in order to improve the relationship between management and floor workers.

·         Describe how the floor workers view the influence and power of management. Discuss how this is negatively and/or positively impacting the workplace and changes you would recommend.

·         Explain the differences between leadership and management. Provide examples of how management at the factory could utilize leadership styles to improve networking with the floor workers.

·         Conclusion

Include  at least three references.

Format  your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Post by Day 4 your thoughts about whether or not animals have an awareness of their actions as humans do, based on the information on animal thought, language, and intelligence. Explain and justify your answer. Then weigh in on the value and ethics of conducting animal research on complex mental abilities. Again, explain and justify your responses.
