Diversity and Ethical Codes

A manager at your company overhears another employee who is Caucasian directing the N-word at an African-American employee. When she confronts him, he claims that he was using it as a term of endearment—a claim that is not explicitly contested by the “friend” to whom he’s directing it. The manager, concerned that her being Caucasian and in a position of authority, fears her intervention may escalate things, so she chose to accept the explanation and move on. The manager has come to you, the Human Resources Manager, for advice.

What are some of the limitations of this code for multicultural professional practice? In what ways do you believe this code is culturally biased and culturally encapsulated? What evidence is there that this code is culturally sensitive? If you believe there is no evidence that the code is culturally sensitive, what evidence is there that the code is not culturally sensitive? Discuss the importance of cultural sensitivity, and explain what you believe are the implications for ethical professional practice. In addition to the required readings, cite at least two additional references that include examples of a better ethical code.

When boys and girls are born, does their DNA already know what it means to be masculine or feminine?  Or do boys and girls learn masculinity and femininity by watching others?  Is it nature (biology) or is it nurture (environment)?

Week 6 Grief Research Paper

In 750-1,000 words, provide a research-guided and supportive essay which  addresses the following: Analyze the Five Stages of Grief as explained by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross.  Identify two specific cultures and how they handle the death of people in their culture. Discuss the impact that cultural differences may have on each of the stages in Dr. Kubler-Ross’ theory.

Personal experiences should not be included.

The major components of social structure are culture, social class, social status, roles, groups, and social institutions. Use social structure to explain why some Americans have such a low rate of college graduation. (See Table 9.3, Race-Ethnicity and Education, on page 276).

At an inpatient residential treatment facility, a depressed client unrelentingly begs the attending consultant for a weekend discharge pass. While begging for the pass, the client states, “You remind me so much of my brother. He was always such an easygoing, kind person. Whatever you decide is fine. I trust my brother so much to make wise decisions. You are so much like him. So I trust you will make the right decision.” The consultant finally agrees and allows the patient to be discharged. The consultant is aware that the client has attempted suicide two times in the past. The consultant does not take the time to check with the licensed on-site clinician in charge before signing the weekend discharge slip. Once you have an understanding, observe a small group of people, which can be comprised of friends, family, or a group of strangers. The small group should have three to six people and be composed of both male and female members. Observe the group for 15–30 minutes, looking for the types of interactions taking place and how each person uses nonverbal communication to make oneself understood. Pay special attention to nonverbal signals and gestures (body language, facial expressions, eye contact, hand gestures, space, tone, appearance, etc.).

** Understand when doing your observations that you must protect the privacy of the people you observe. Anything you discover as part of your observation that does not relate directly to the objective of the assignment needs to be kept confidential. There are three different roles that you, as the observer, may have as defined below (Patton, 1986).
