For this Discussion, you will view videos that depict different interviewing techniques. You will then analyze and evaluate the techniques used, and discuss how you will utilize best practices when you conduct your own interviews.

To prepare for this Discussion:   Review the interview mini-project assignment introduced in the Application this week. The best practices and pitfalls you identify in this assignment will help you complete the first part of the mini-project.

Review the required reading in Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches; “ Stretching”  Exercises for Qualitative Researchers; and Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods for this week.

Review the two media segments on interviewing. As you view the videos, practice your observation skills by creating field notes for yourself. Be careful to distinguish between observation and interpretation as Dr. Crawford warns in the videos.

Evaluate the techniques used in each interview. Which practices could you use in your own interviews? Which practices should you avoid? Where did the person in the video go wrong? How could this issue have been avoided or corrected?

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3, a 3-paragraph evaluation of the interview techniques used in both interviews. Include commentary and analysis of best practices, practices to avoid, and how this viewing experience will inform your approach to the interviewing assignment introduced in this week’s Application.

This week you will be discussing the importance of parental influences on the development of children based upon what you learned about childrens’ emotional and social development. Use your own child, a niece or nephew, a neighbor’s child, or any child you’ve watched grow and develop as an example to answer the questions below. How did the parental or caregiver influences impact the child? Do you think birth order had an impact on the relationship between the child and his/her caregiver? Why or why not?

a 3- to 5-page APA-formatted reflection paper that addresses the following: A discussion of your “before and after” understanding of theories of personality.A reflection on which theory you found most effective for understanding human behavior and which you found least effective. An explanation of four key takeaways from this course that you can apply to better understand yourself and your professional and/or personal relationships.

Remember that this is a personal reflection, but it still needs to demonstrate your exploration and learning of the week’s topics. Be specific, and provide examples.

The Case Example

In this Module we learned about the three types of multiple murders: Serial, mass or spree  murders. Choose one case of multiple murder (either serial, mass or spree). Research the case online (do not use Wikipedia as anything other than a jumping off point) and write a paper summarizing the case. Present this summary in the form of a 4-5 page paper which will be used as a supplemental reading in a class on criminal behavior.  In the paper:

Provide a detailed description of the case and the type of multiple murder it signifies. Use at least three sources beyond your online notes and assigned textbook. Discuss the reasoning for the crime according to the offender (if available) or other sources Analyze the case in light of at least two psychological theories that may explain or add to the understanding of the event or case Draw a conclusion about the psychological causes of this crime.

Remember, this paper will be assigned as required reading for another class, so make sure that you appropriately define all of the psychological terms that you use as if you were writing for someone who does not have any background in the subject.

Please be sure to include a cover page and a reference page. The paper should be appropriately formatted and cited in accordance to APA standards.

Assignment 2: Influences of Family Dynamics on Childhood—Self Review

You now understand that there are many different areas of impact within the realms of parenting styles. Explore your own experience and reaction to the parenting disciplines and styles of your own parents. This awareness will help you in your interactions with children.

Reflect on the family dynamics that were prevalent in your own home (such as your temperament, gender, placement in the sibling group, parent’s life stage, marital quality of parents, traditions, and expectations). Based on this reflection, respond to the following: Looking back at your own experiences and influences, which dynamic would you say had the biggest impact on your own development during childhood and adolescence and the role that you played in your own family? Give reasons for your answer. Think about your role in the context of your family. How is it explained by the various family dynamics such as your temperament, gender, placement in the sibling group, parent’s life stage, marital quality of parents, traditions, expectations, and so on? Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research your findings further. Incorporate information from at least two of these academic sources to support your statements and ideas in your response to the following: How does your biggest impact align with the research? Who are the major proponents (theorists past or current) of your chosen dynamic and how did they reach these conclusions? Ask two adults what or who had the most impact on them. Compare this data with your experience and your research about prominent dynamics.

Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include separate title and reference pages. Apply APA standards to citation of sources, including use of in-text citations and full references. Academic sources could include your textbook, required readings for this module, or academic journal articles found in the Argosy University online library.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M2_A2.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M2_A2.doc.

  Assignment 2: Measuring Performance

Gathering performance information is important; however, if it is not used appropriately, it will not lead to the desired outcome. Managers need to understand how to gather and use performance information and be empowered to communicate performance information to employees in a way that will produce the appropriate outcomes as well as support organizational goals.

For this assignment, you will analyze the data provided and write a report in approximately 4–5 pages based on your findings.

BANKS Industries, a client of yours, is attempting to train managers to use performance information effectively. It has implemented a system where both the immediate supervisor and the department head are evaluating employees using a graphic rating scale. The employees being evaluated are all call center representatives for a help desk that handles problems with its personal computing devices product line. You have had an opportunity to review its job descriptions and performance evaluation document.

A group of twenty call center representatives has already been evaluated. The evaluation uses a graphic rating scale that results in an average score per employee. The graphic rating scale is weighted as follows: Needs Improvement = 1 Meets Expectations = 2 Exceeds Expectations = 3

A score of 2–2.49 is considered acceptable. Anything over 2.5 exceeds expectations. Scores under 2 indicate a need for improvement in at least one area. BANKS Industries has decided that for call center representatives, the evaluations will be conducted by both the call center manager and the district manager. Both managers are present and walk the floor on a regular basis, and both are reasonably familiar with the employees. The call center manager reports to the district manager.

After looking at the ratings from this round of evaluations, management is concerned that there may be some inter-rater reliability issues. It looks like the two managers do not always agree on ratings for these employees. Here is a comparison of the average scores:

The client is not sure whether this is an effective approach to evaluating performance. You have been contacted to consult with this client and assist in identifying issues and training managers to better use the appraisal instrument.

In 4–5 pages: Define and discuss a graphic rating scale as an appraisal instrument. Conduct a statistical analysis of the two sets of data using a t-test in Microsoft Excel to determine whether the differences in ratings are statistically significant (include your computations). Explain the results of your t-test, including a table/graphic representation and the implications of your results. Assess the appraisal instrument and make at least two recommendations for improvement. Identify training topics for management to ensure better inter-rater reliability in the future. Include a justification.

Your final product will be a Microsoft Word document of approximately 4–5 pages in length and utilize at least three scholarly sources in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Microsoft Excel computations of the t-test should also be submitted.
