In the first few units of this course, you studied how children develop their sense of self as a function of learning from their families, their peers, and their experiences about themselves. To better understand this progression of the development of self, you are going to interview two different people about their memories of friendships. Find two children, two adults, or one child and one adult (depending on availability) and ask them the questions about their friendships and how their social relationships informed their development of self. When you have completed this activity, you will write a 1,000-word paper to describe your findings/theories/concepts related to social development and the development of self. Specifically, your paper should demonstrate your ability to analyze themes from your interviews. Include in your paper a summary of each interview, the development of self of each person interviewed, a comparison of the two interviewees’ development of self, and possible ways their development of self could have been more positively influenced in childhood.

Identify and explain themes and features, such as perpetrator, family, or victim characteristics, that seem to be common to all three types of family violence: sibling abuse, caregiver abuse, and parricide. Identify and explain themes and features that differ among these types of family violence. Consider the roles and responsibilities of forensic psychology professionals. Pick the type of family violence among the three that interests you the most and that would be professionally relevant. Identify features of this type of violence with limited or no information. Explain why you think a forensic psychology professional would need more information about these features. For example: In parricide, little is known about the victims of parricide. Information about the victims’ characteristics, as well as their relationships with the perpetrator and other family members, could assist case workers in identifying families at risk of parricide [further explain why . . . ]. Describe how you would conduct a scholarly literature review to gather more information about the features that you have identified.

After developing your vision “My Personal Vision Statement—“My career as a Cognitive Behavior Counselor began in 2003 when I was promoted with the Michigan Department of Corrections. After an extensive training for the Thinking for a Change evidence-based program and Substance Abuse Counselor for adult male offenders I realized I found my calling. My personal vision is to use myself, life experiences, and knowledge to impact positive attitudes with those who may cross my path in life. I wish to inspire and motivate them to discover and develop their true potential and live their lives to the fullest. In order for this vision to be fulfilled, I need to finish m Master’s Degree and gain advance evidence-based training experience so I can become more experienced with my facilitation in this area.  

Creating meaningful goals you created a research question related to your goals and searched the literature for answers—My Research Question “I gathered a couple of insights about depression in my research. One is that some personalities are prone to depression more than others especially the introverts, perfectionists. Depression affects memory especially the part of the memory that deals with tasks like names and places. Depression is also linked to some diseases like heart disease, leads to faster aging and diabetes among others (Elliott, Huizinga & Menard, 2012). The research will play a very important role in my future career because it will help me keep up to date with current information about depression and other illnesses. I will be able to know the best and most modern treatments for various conditions and their public health interventions. Psychological Research and Public Policy/Law

Psychological research is and has been applied to many areas of daily life. From television commercials to a first grade classroom, you can see the effects of research in action. When psychological research is used to influence and shape public policy, in general, and specific laws, trained forensic psychologists and forensic psychology professionals typically are behind the scenes. Individuals who understand psychological research and the legal/political/legislative process are excellent candidates to help meld these two seemingly dissimilar areas.

To prepare for this Discussion: Review the article, “Washington’s Sexually Violent Predator Law:Legislative History and Comparisons With Other States.” Think about how historical and forensic psychological research contributes to the establishment of law and policy. Review the article, “Stalking: Lessons From Recent Research.” Pay particular attention to how research is used to influence community action and thereby affect public policy. Review the article, “Sexually Violent Predator Evaluations: Empirical Evidence, Strategies for Professionals, and Research Directions.” Consider how the findings described in this article might be helpful in influencing or setting public policy.
