Assignment 1: Parenting Styles

Parents demonstrate varying levels of warmth, expectations for adherence to rules, and openness of communication with children. Understanding the characteristics and outcomes associated with parenting styles can guide you in helping parents develop the most effective skills for raising their children.

Tasks:

Use your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet to review the following parenting styles: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive (Baumrind, 1971), and disengaged (Novak & Pelaez, 2004). After reviewing the styles, answer the following questions:Which parenting style or styles did your parents use? Describe the impact on your development. ***PLEASE USE THE AUTHORITATIVE STYLE ***If you are a parent, which style have you seen to be most or least effective? (I AM A PARENT) If you are not a parent, which style do you imagine you would use? Discuss the impact of various aspects of culture on parenting styles. Are there some cultural groups that would benefit from one style of parenting more than others?

Support your answers with research and developmental theory. Consider outcomes to Erikson’s stages for each parenting style. For example, which style is most likely to produce a positive outcome during the stage of trust versus mistrust? How would each parenting style impact psychosocial development according to Erikson?

Assignment 3: Review and Research of Childhood Influences

In M1: Assignment 2, you examined an important factor contributing to a child’s success. Now with your understanding that there are many different areas of impact within the realms of family, peers, school, and community, it is helpful to explore your own experience and reaction to some of these areas of influence. It is very common for our own experiences as a child to significantly impact our interactions with children, if we are not first aware of our beliefs and reactions.

Based on your review of the influences of family, peers, schools, and community, respond to the following: Looking back at your own experiences and influences, analyze which of these influences had the biggest impact on your own development when you were a child or adolescent. Give reasons for your answer. How has this impact (for example, family or peer situation, community influence, or school environment) been influenced by the various adults in your life (parents, teachers, coaches)? Using the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research your findings further. Respond to the following: Explain how your biggest influence aligns with the research. Incorporate information from at least two academic sources to support your statements and ideas. Academic sources could include your textbook, required readings for this module, or academic journal articles found in the Argosy University online library. Who are the major proponents (theorists past or current) of your chosen influence and how did they reach these conclusions? Ask two adults what or who had the most impact on them. Compare this self-report data with your experience and your research about prominent influences.

Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include separate title and reference pages. Apply APA standards to citation of sources, including use of in-text citations and full references. Academic sources could include your textbook, required readings for this module, or academic journal articles found in the Argosy University online library.

Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

Assignment 3: Measures of Crime

Measuring crime can be a difficult process. By its very nature, crime is something that goes undetected. Law enforcement has developed a variety of techniques to track crime, such as police reports and victim reports. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) uses the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program for tracking crime; it reports crime in more than one way. All crime reporting and tracking systems categorize crime and have certain limitations.

Measuring crime involves tracking statistics such as demographic information and moderator variables related to the crimes. Moderator variables are any third variable in a correlation that affects the relationship between the first two variables. For example, we may find that gender is related to violent crime with a higher percentage of males engaging in violent behavior. However, a moderator variable would be age, with the highest percentage of violent offenders being below the age of 30.

Research US crime statistics using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet. You can also use the following: US Department of Justice, The Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2009). 2008 crime in the United States: About crime in the U.S. Retrieved from http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2008

Select a crime and write a report addressing the following: Summarize the statistics from the last two reporting years. Be sure to include demographic information such as ethnicity, race, age, gender, marital status, employment status, socioeconomic group, etc., and moderator variables related to the crime. Examine the reliability and validity of these statistics. Are they accurate? Why or why not? Be sure to discuss how age, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic level are related to offending and representation in the criminal justice system. Explain whether certain populations are overrepresented in the statistics. If so, why?

Use the textbook and peer-reviewed sources to support your arguments.

Write a 2–3-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

Assignment 2: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Over the years, trait theory has been increasingly used by corporations in hiring and in career counseling. Research has shown that certain combinations of personality traits fit well with different career paths. Thus, personality trait tests for specific jobs can be predictive of both success and satisfaction. Understanding your own personality-trait combinations can give you great insight into your own strengths and weaknesses. With this understanding, you can work to grow your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

In this assignment, you will explore your personality using a personality test and then analyze the results.

Part 1

First, explore your personality preferences by completing Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MTBI). The full version of the test can only be administered by a trained professional; however, there are many online informal versions of the test which you can find on the Internet. You can search for the test using any one of the following keywords:Personality test + Myers-Briggs typologyMyers-Briggs test

Record your four-lettered personality type after completion of the test and use the Internet to interpret your personality type.

Part 2

In this part of the assignment, you will write a research paper that analyses your results. Do the following:Mention your four-letter type and the URL of the Web site where you took the test.Discuss whether this type accurately represents what you know about yourself. Examine the four spectrums and explain your answer thoroughly. Substantiate your agreement or disagreement with real-life behavioral examples.Analyze what you consider the strengths and the weaknesses or challenges of this type. List three strengths and three weaknesses and provide a rationale for each.Evaluate why this test could be a valuable tool for an employer.Analyze how a clinician may use this test as a tool for promoting meaningful interventions in treatment.Summarize what you have learned about yourself through this exercise.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

By Wednesday, March 23, 2016 , deliver your assignment to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.Assignment 2 Grading Criteria Maximum Points Evaluated if the four-letter type identified by the test was accurate and was justified with real-life behavioral examples.20Identified three strengths and three weaknesses of this type and substantiated answers with a rationale for each showing analysis of strengths and weaknesses of this type.20Analyzed why this test may be a valuable tool for an employer and a clinician with appropriate justification.20Evaluated what you have learned about yourself through this exercise.20Wrote in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrated ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; displayed accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.20Total: 100

Not only is context important in determining whether an individual’s behavior meets the criteria for a mental disorder, but culture and family background can also be important factors. Some behaviors would clearly be “abnormal” in any culture or family, while other behaviors are not so clearly defined.

Using your textbook and the Argosy University online library resources, research the role of cultural norms in identifying mental disorders. Based on your research, respond to the following: Why is culture an important consideration in the interview, assessment, and diagnostic process? How might your own cultural, ethnic, or family values, rules, or traditions be misinterpreted as “abnormal” by someone from a dissimilar background? Give examples in your answer.

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. If you refer to research information, cite sources applying APA standards.
