Over the last several decades, the field of psychopathology and the study of psychological disorders have gradually moved away from exploring social and environmental issues, and moved toward the biological/neurological understanding of disorders. This has led to significant advancements in medication-based treatments.

Treating psychological disorder through medication can often be faster, more effective, and cost less when compared to traditional psychotherapy. At the same time, becoming overly reliant on medication carries substantial risks.

A number of studies have found that psychotropic medications are frequently over-prescribed (Mojtabai & Olfson, 2010; Standish, 2008). Furthermore, the long-term effects of many medications are still unknown.

In 3-4 Paragraphs:

What are some of the possible benefits and detriments involved in the pharmacological treatment of psychological disorders? Have we (society) become too reliant on medication treatments? What might be some of the long-term ramifications of overprescribing these medications?

Assignment 2: Professional Portfolio

This assignment requires you to gather a compilation of papers and projects from this course and previous courses and add them to your Professional Portfolio. The portfolio is designed to help you compile all you have learned throughout your undergraduate studies with the best examples of your work to represent what you are capable of doing when you graduate the program. This assignment also gives you a opportunity to reflect on what you have learned as a student of psychology, and to prepare to actualize your post-graduation goals. It will serve as a resource as you navigate the world of prospective employers and graduate admissions committees. The student portfolio is also a measure of effectiveness for the Argosy University baccalaureate program in Psychology.  As you develop professionally following graduation, you can add work samples and other pertinent materials, as well as modify existing documents, to reflect that development.

The Professional Portfolio includes two main sections.  A Professional Profile section that is completed by all students with either an Employment focus or a Graduate School focus, depending on your post-baccalaureate plans. The second section holds your Professional Work Samples demonstrating your abilities, skills, and competencies across a range of tasks and objectives.  This section also includes a Final Evaluation of your work samples, yourself, and the psychology program.

The Professional Profile section summarizes your career planning and professional goals. You have already compiled the documents for this section in Modules 1 and 2 of this course. It contains the following documents:A Cover Letter as a way to introduce yourself to a potential employer This includes details about yourself and why you feel you are qualified for the position. (Employment).

ORA Personal Statement describing your immediate and long-term career goals, including an explanation of why these goals are appropriate in terms of your knowledge, skills, personal characteristics, values, and experiences (Graduate School).

The Professional Work Samples section demonstrates your performance and mastery of Argosy University’s program outcomes/competencies for the Psychology major . Select 3-5 documents to serve as samples of your best work in the program. Together, they should illustrate your mastery of all the 7 program outcomes listed below. Examples of the type of work that would illustrate each outcome is provided below, as well. The 3-5 documents should be samples of your work that you completed in previous courses as an undergraduate student.

These outcomes are listed below, along with the assignments that could be included to demonstrate mastery of the outcome:Cognitive abilities (critical thinking and information literacy): Assignments or projects that demonstrate problem solving, analysis, synthesis, appropriate use of information resources, etc.Research skills: A copy of a research proposal, a survey developed, etc.Communication skills (written and oral): A topic paper, presentation outline, or PowerPoint that demonstrates your written and oral communication skills.Ethics & Diversity awareness: Papers that demonstrate your understanding and/or analysis of ethical and diversity issues in psychology.Knowledge of foundations of the field: Assignments, papers, or projects that demonstrate your understanding of basic concepts, theories, and empirical findings in one or more of the domains of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social.Knowledge of applied psychology: Assignments, papers, or projects from courses and/or an internship that demonstrates your ability to apply psychology to personal, social, and/or organizational problems.Interpersonal Effectiveness: PowerPoint presentations, videos of your presentations that demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively, appreciate diversity and cultural sensitivity and awareness of your impact on others.

Once you have assembled your work samples, you will write a 700-1000 word narrative to serve as a preface to the Professional Work Samples section. This narrative should consist of a clear and thoughtful analysis of how each work sample reveals your strengths and areas for improvement, according to each of the seven areas addressed in the program outcomes/competencies (listed above). Towards this purpose, you will complete the Student Self Appraisal of Learning first, and then use that to generate the preface . Make sure you also address how you intend to strengthen your competencies in all areas as you graduate onto the next step of your professional career. On which areas will you focus most and why?

This preface should also include an evaluation of the Psychology program as well as suggestions for the program that will enable it to help future Psychology majors develop these strengths and overcome these weaknesses in the future.

Tihis should be a 20 page literature review, not including the title page and reference page. The article is on Autism spectrum disorder, social delays and how that impairs play in children between the ages of 2 and 4. This is for a psychology course, so there needs to be a strong thesis, argument of discovery (what is known) and arugment of advvocacy (what is unknown). I already have that information and I only need someone to write the paper for me. There are 20 specific articles that should be used for this information and I can send them once I have someone to complete this.

Resource: Ch. 3, 9, & 13 of Personality: Theory and Research (plus additional chapters as needed, and any other outside sources that your team finds).

Create a 3-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation that addresses the following: Do men and women develop personality in a different manner? Is there a difference in the expression of personality in varying social and occupational roles?

Note: the 3 slide count does not include the title, introduction, conclusion and reference slides.

Make sure to include a minimum of 3 sources in your presentation: the text, a peer-reviewed journal article and one other source.

Make sure that the bulk of the information is in the notes section, and that your slides follow the 6:6 rule (no more than 6 bullet points per slide, with 6 words per point).

Make sure that your presentation fits APA standards, including using appropriate citations when necessary in the notes section and on the slides themselves.

Begin each writing assignment by identifying the question number you are answering followed by the actual question itself (in bold type). • Use a standard essay format for responses to all questions (i.e., an introduction, middle paragraphs and conclusion). 500 words or more, apa format

1.What are defense mechanisms? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using them to

cope with stress? Provide examples of three of them.

2.Differentiate the psychoanalytic approach from the behavioral approach to therapy on any four

 dimensions (e.g., technique, effectiveness, etc.).

3.What are the five stages of dying as detailed by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross? Describe each one

1 What are some of the vulnerable populations we may see as clinicians?  How can one ensure that an informed consent is not coerced from vulnerable populations? What safeguards should be in place to ensure that the consent is truly voluntary? What difficulties do you anticipate encountering in regards to these vulnerable clients and what actions will you take?

2. Why is the selection of culturally neutral assessment tools so critical to the ethical practice of psychology?  What can potential harm result if assessment materials are culture-bound? What potential limitations do you foresee encountering with culturally neutral assessment tools?

3. With so much information available online, what does the APA offer as guidelines regarding informed consent and the Internet?  What ‘social network’ contact do you feel would be appropriate with clients and why?

4. According to the APA Ethics Code, what conditions would justify termination of therapy? Do you agree with the prohibitions? Why or why not?  What steps would you need to take to assist the client with the termination?

5. There are many things that we have assumptions about.  Becoming a professional means we need to challenge those assumptions and educate yourself to best treat our clients.  What are your thoughts about these?

6. This past year there was a big uproar as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Scalia (now deceased) indicated that African Americans were being set up for failure if sent to a highly prestigious school and should be sent to an ‘easier’ school where they could be successful.  Many people took this to mean that the speaker felt African Americans were less intelligent overall.   What is your view on this type of stereotype. See the attached link.

7. What do you think about this issue?  What is the impact of nature vs nurture?  How, as a psychologist, can you address such stereotyping as still keeps raising its ugly head? See the Attached article on intelligence and culture for your review

8.Using family or friends as an interpreter can have its drawbacks.  What if the family member tries to protect the client so does not give you all the information?  What if they do not understand medical terms so they mistranslate?  There is an article that addresses the need to utilize medical interpreters in our work rather than family or friends.  AT&T (phone company) here in California has a translation service for any culture.  Also, there are companies that certify interpreters so that the translation can hold up in court.  See attached article

9.As is noted in one of your readings for the week, psychological tests are often culturally aimed at the Western population.  What specifically can we do to try and mitigate the issues found, and how can we protect the client from improper use of tests that are not within their cultural awareness?
