Applying Psychodynamic Theories

When thinking of classic Freudian techniques, what images come to mind? Perhaps the omniscient Freud smoking a pipe, sitting behind a client, passively taking notes– or a troubled client lying sprawled on a couch speaking about their sexuality or early experiences in dealing with aggression or angst.

Though many associate all psychodynamic theories with well-known images of Freudian psychoanalysis, the works of Jung, Adler, and other prominent psychodynamic theorists took strides to significantly depart from Freud’s theory of personality and counseling. Like humanistic theories, modern psychodynamic approaches place the counselor across from the client, actively engaging them in the counseling process. During this process however, counselors place much focus on the unconscious mind and past relationships of the client– a focus unique to psychodynamic theories.

In this Discussion, you continue to explore unique interventions and strategies derived from the psychodynamic theoretical approach. You then apply one theory, Psychoanalytic, Jungian Analytical, or Adlerian, to facilitate your interventions with Deidre.

Posting Directions: In the subject line of your post, use the following title format: “Title of Discussion: the theory you selected for this Discussion”. Your initial post must be at least 200 words in length.

Post by Day 3 a brief description of the psychoanalytic theory you selected. Then, based on this theoretical approach to describe two interventions you could employ with Deidre and explain why. Finally, explain how each of these interventions would help Deidre move toward her goals.

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues using one or more of the following approaches:Share additional insights to help your colleagues apply their theories in a different way.Provide feedback on how your colleagues’ interventions would help the client move toward her goals.Provide additional interventions for your colleagues to consider.

Every generation of psychologists seems to engage in practices that the next generation looks back upon with concern and regret. Many of the former treatments for the mentally ill are now viewed as unethical.Reflect back on what you have learned throughout this course about the evolution of psychology throughout history.Research a form of treatment used with the mentally ill during a particular decade in the 20th century. Include information about the key historical events that were happening around the time this treatment was being used, as well as identifying the popular culture of the time. How might the psychological theories of the time have influenced attitudes fostering discrimination of people with mental illness?Analyze the themes and perspective(s) that underlie the rationale for this treatment.Explain how all of the above (i.e., historical events, culture, and the underlying rationale for this treatment) related to the popular psychological theory at that time. Conclude your presentation with a question raised about a current treatment that may be parallel to your findings.

Create a PowerPoint Presentation, using information you learned in your textbook and at least 1 peer-reviewed article to support your response.  You can use relevant Web sites or journal articles as sources for your presentation, but make sure that they are from reputable web and print sources such as the AU online library, or information, .net, or .edu sites as opposed to .com. Please avoid Wikipedia.

Your presentation should include approximately 10-15 slides. Follow the instructions on the PowerPoint Tips document.

Experimental research helps you understand what occurs in the real world. Research is valuable because it enables you to study in a controlled environment. However, some real-life experiences cannot be replicated in the laboratory. Sometimes an interesting situation occurs, and researchers study it after the fact because they cannot create the same situation again. Under such circumstances, researchers look back at actual real-life occurrences and create theories based on what they discover. In this Application, you look back at a situation that already has occurred and determine how factors related to everyday decision making can be applied.

The assigned articles and videos review a real-life situation about a pilot who made the decisions necessary to land a plan on the Hudson River safely.

To prepare for this assignment:

Review the articles, “Hero Pilot’s Records, IQ Scores Released by School District in ‘Accident’” and “Chesley Sullenberger, Hero: How a Veteran Pilot Pulled Off That Amazing Landing.” Focus on Chesley Sullenberger’s intelligence.

Review the article, “The Hero of Flight 1549,” and the associated video clips. Think about which decision-making models that you learned fit into this incident.

You may also use the internet to research Chesley Sullenberger’s experience with Flight 1549.

Consider how potential emotional responses impacted Chesley Sullenberger’s decisions that resulted in his successfully landing the plane on the Hudson River.

The assignment (2 pages): APA (Cited resources including cited within written assignment)

•Explain how emotional responses may have contributed to the successful outcome of Chesley Sullenberger’s decisions in landing the plane. Be specific.

•Based upon what you know about the impact of emotional responses on decision making, explain how the outcome might have been different if Chesley Sullenberger was a less experienced pilot and why. Be specific.

1) Read the “Is There Evidence For God? William Lane Craig vs. Lawrence Krauss debate. ( I have attached it)

2) Write a 3 page 12-point double-spaced paper where you summarize (do not quote) the best argument for the theistic side and the best argument for the atheistic side.  Then, in one paragraph explain why you think that one side or the other had the better argument. This paper will then have four paragraphs:

            1) The introduction

            2) The best argument for the theist side

            3) The best argument for the atheistic side

            4) Your explanation of the better argument

Please read very carefully and follow the instruction as it is.

Bill is a 51-year-old Caucasian male who has chronic diabetes and hypertension. He has been seen at the clinic by a number of specialist physicians over the past 6 years. Married for 24 years with no children, Bill has recently been placed on medical disability after working at a telephone company for 18 years. His diabetes has advanced, and his blood pressure readings have been consistently elevated recently.

Bill has had prescriptions for medication for his diabetes and hypertension for 5 years, but he often misses doses or refuses to follow dosage instructions. He also has had scheduled appointments with a dietitian and exercise therapist, but he misses appointments or fails to follow their instructions to improve his eating and activity. Although the team members at the clinic have all tried very hard to work with him, he has refused to follow through.

Bill is slightly overweight. His eating patterns and appetite are normal, although he does not follow the guidelines recommended by his dietitian. Sleep patterns indicate some sleep restriction, and he averages only 5 hours of sleep per night. His sexual interest and desire is reduced, and he has had problems with erectile dysfunction. Although he went to the gym briefly several years ago, he is not physically active at this time other than occasional walks with his dog. Because he no longer works, he is quite sedentary, filling most of his day watching sports on TV and playing games on the Internet. He smokes about 10 cigarettes per day and reports having several beers on weekends. Caffeine use is minimal. He has a good but somewhat distant relationship with his spouse. He has few friends since leaving work and little social support aside from his wife. Overall, he has little structure in his life. He has a pessimistic attitude toward life in general and feels badly about his medical problems and his inability to work or have sex. He has not been seen by a mental health clinician, but there is likelihood of depression.

Submit your final research paper to the   M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox  by   Monday, January 18, 2016. It should include a cover page, abstract, intro/lit review, method section, results (simply report what statistics you propose to use), discussion section, and reference page.

Your final paper should be double-spaced, 8 to 10 pages in length, and properly edited.

Please use the following information to help you with each section:Cover page: Pay attention to APA style and refer to the example in your textbook.

Abstract: Is written on its own page and is a very brief summary of your study. Think in terms of one sentence stating your research question, one or two sentences regarding background and what we already know about it, one or two sentences regarding your methodology (e.g., how many participants were used and how were your variables assessed), and one or two sentences about your findings.

Intro/lit review: incorporate the feedback and make revisions to the introduction and literature review submitted in Week 4.

Method section: incorporate the feedback and make revisions to the Method section submitted in Week 4.

Results section: in one paragraph, state what statistical test would have been used and why it was chosen.

Discussion section: broken down into the following paragraphs:

paragraph 1: statement of your results/findings (or what you imagine might be your results).

paragraph 2: what might have affected those results (i.e., threats to internal and external validity). Include flaws in your design and confounding variables.

paragraph 3: implications for your findings including the significance and impact on the field as well as future research directions. Reference page: Pay attention to APA style and refer to the example in your textbook.Must anwer all questions, APA guidelines, int-text citations, title page, abstract.

The attachment labeled “Article B” is the main article to use for the assignment. The other attachments are needed to do the assignment as well, but Article B is what needs to be used. I have also added a little more info on what needs to be done.    Review Chapters 5 and 6 in the course text, Research Design. Review the book excerpt “A Typology of Research Purposes and Its Relationship to Mixed Methods.” Review the annotated journal article “Developing Long-Term Physical Activity Participation: A Grounded Theory Study With African American Women,” which is annotated to reveal the how an introduction and purpose statement function. Look to the Introduction Checklist and Purpose Statement Checklist for more guidance in analyzing and evaluating the introduction and purpose statement in your assigned article. Identify the purpose for research in your article according to the nine purposes of research found in “A Typology of Research Purposes and Its Relationship to Mixed Methods.” It is possible that your assigned article may have more than one purpose. Assess and evaluate the introductions and purpose statements. As part of the evaluation, be sure to describe how well the introduction achieves its purpose and, if applicable, include suggestions for improvement. With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a 3-paragraph analysis and evaluation of the article’s introduction and purpose statement. Be sure to include which one (or more, if applicable) of the nine purposes for research from “A Typology of Research Purposes and Its Relationship to Mixed Methods” the article represents. Then, in a final paragraph, ask any questions you may have about introductions and purpose statements.
