It’s due 20:00  March 23rd.

Attached are the options and guideline.

For some options you can make the content up, for example the Dream Diary.

And PLEASE DONT DO THE ONE WHICH YOU OBSERVE CHILDREN.

Coding in your career

This class will include students from several different programs of study – engineering, business, computer science, and IT. What are the general benefits to learning how to program? (Hint – look at music and arts education.) How can programming benefit you in your chosen career field?  What types of coding skills are being required by employers?

Why is Python a great starter language?

Historically, one of the first programming languages we learn has been some variant of BASIC. This is no longer the case.  Why was BASIC good in the past?  Why have we moved to Python?  Feature-by-feature, how powerful is BASIC vs. Python?  Which language of the two do you feel would be more valuable in your career? If there were another language you would choose as your first, what would it be? Why?

Workstations vs. Servers: Requirements, functionality, hardware

One factor that IT professionals must consider when building a server is whether that server should be simply server software installed on regular hardware; server software installed on server hardware; or regular software installed on server hardware. What are the differences between workstation software and server software? Windows workstations all have elements of server software built-in. What are these elements, and why is the Windows Professional OS not considered a server? Similarly, the Windows server OS can run regular workstation applications such as MS Office or Adobe Photoshop. Why is this a bad idea? Can you find a situation where it might be appropriate?  What exactly makes server hardware so valuable/expensive? What feature requirements drive the server market?  What (if any) are the same feature requirements that might be found in server software/OS environments?

Generational Languages

As more and more programming languages are developed for various purposes, the industry has learned how to categorize languages based upon their features, abilities, and power. These categories are called “Generations” Research the current Generational Languages (GL) model. Where does Python fall within that model? Why? Choose two other languages within your industry. Determine where they fall within the model and why. Based upon your research, do ALL programming languages fit within the GL model? Why? Should it be expanded? What would be your recommendations?

Script Kiddies & Code Monkeys

These two terms can be interpreted as derogatory, but they also appear as standard jargon in the workplace. What is a script kiddie? What is a code monkey? What are the differences? Does it matter? Does a kiddie make more money than a monkey? Programmer? Developer? Engineer? How are these terms used in a negative manner?  Do they fit within a Christian Worldview?  Why/Why not? Within the tech industry, how are these terms applied? Do you want to be a script kiddie or code monkey someday? Why/Why not?

Runtime vs. Realtime Considerations

Thus far, we have learned several feature differences between scripting and programming languages. Research the concept of compilation with regards to code. Is there a difference in how scripts are compiled vs. how programs are compiled? What is the difference between compiletime and runtime?  Should these differences & definitions have an impact on what language you choose to write in? Why? Research and determine what types of languages are used predominantly in your industry, and why those choices might relate to the differences between runtime and realtime compilation and/or execution.

Western cultures think of time in linear terms while other cultures perceive the passage of time in cyclical terms (Helman, 2005). Helman states, “The clock, the watch and the calendar are among the main cultural symbols of Western industrial society” (para. 3). How might a culture’s perception of time influence views of individuals in later adulthood? What other cultural differences might impact a people’s view of aging? This week, you explore different cultures’ perspectives on aging and consider how these differences might impact social work.

To prepare for this Discussion, research two cultures different from your own and compare their perspectives on aging to that of your own culture (AMERICAN CULTURE).

Post a Discussion that compares your culture’s (american) perspective on aging to the perspectives of the two cultures you researched. Explain why you think these differences exist. Also, explain how different perspectives on aging might impact social work practice.

Popular Languages

There are many programming (and scripting) languages that are used to develop device operating systems and applications. (Note – charts might be useful in this analysis.) What languages seem to be used the most to create PC/Mac operating systems? Why? What languages seem to be used to create mobile operating systems? Why? What languages are used most often for Web applications? Why? What languages are used most often for Android and/or IOS mobile applications? Why? Of all of these languages, what are the top three?   Within your field of study, what languages would best serve you going forward? Why?
